They should have got a better MUA

Two heads equal four feet but I can only see two and it spoils the picture.

As I said in a previous post, just to be controversial and it seems to have worked

Whilst it is tasteless it isn't exactly out of place for Vogue, who's prefered clientele are the sort of people who couldn't give a toss about anything other than excess.

How does the original image hold up against american beauty pageants?

As controversial as the vogue image may seem, parents are happy enough to parade their children like this:

Ken, go and hire a copy of 'Bugsy Malone' and enjoy an evening of being 'disgusted of LLanelli'.
As to the argument that young boys wouldn't dress up like that, is rather spurious. Boys are boys and girls are girls.

Careful, we'll end up going onto discussions of the work of Nan Golding, Tierney Gearon and Sally Mann who all shocking in their own way but are all equally regarded as 'artists' (although not by me)

The main difference is that the people you quote are primarily ONLY known because of their notoriety in this area. I would broadly agree with your evaluation, but would exclude Sally Mann as long as you look at her entire body of work.

I agree Sally Mann is exceptional which can be seen in her most controversial work (IMO) "Immediate Family" , but the other two I wouldn't hesitate to class them as GWC types as far as their photography goes (I should have made this more clear above but my comment was a general one to keep my reply short/sweet)

Just for the hell of it, here's two images of Sally's which are truely amazing from a photography point of view (IMO):

What can I say? I have maintained from the outset that I don't like it. Your attempts at ridiculing me aren't going to make me change my mind about it.
I don't mind having an argument but I can't make much of one with this because it is more a gut feeling rather than any reasoned out, thought process... Religion, capital punishment, political correctness, and those effing wankers that govern us, are all things I'm quite happy to argue about if you want..

Ken, keep your hair on. I am not trying to ridicule you, but question the basis of your argument. Also please bear in mind that I haven't actually stated a poistion on the images in question.
Let me put it simply (primarily for my benefit).
I think that there is nothing wrong with an image of a naked young girl.
I think there is everything wrong with somebody being aroused by the image of a naked young girl.
Those are the two extreme positions.
What I am questioning is the reasoning of those that feel uncomfortable with such an image. I am not saying they are wrong, I just want to know their thinking.
You piggybacked onto somebody elses view, that boys don't dress up as adults therefore it was wrong to portray girls doing so. First of all that premise is quite wrong and secondly girls behave differently to boys, so that is pretty much an apple and pears comparison.

I don't have a problem with the content of this image because it is clearly a fashion shot advertising the jewellery. The pose isn't provocative and her dress isn't exactly showing anything. Yes she does look more grown up with her hair and makeup done but thats what you expect from Vogue magazine - she's not going to be sat there with her Toy Story pyjamas on, is she?

I take greater offence at companies (I believe it was Tesco?) supplying pole dancing kits and thongs for 6 year olds as those things are generally aimed for late teens upwards.

Regarding the original subject image I don't really think it's good or bad taste, or naughty or nice, i'd just look at it, find it a bit blah/pointless and think, "probably an attempt at being controversial but if that's the intent it hasn't provoked the desired response in me" to be honest.
I could perhaps see how people might take issue with the pose.

The second image, dare I say, I actually quite like. It captures kids raiding mum's make up and clothes (although a make up artist back then would have taken the fun out of it ) in an OTT fashion mag' standard way quite well.

Honestly I think there are FAR worse ways kids are being sexualised at the moment, a level on which these don't even factor as I don't think there's anything on those levels really to these images.

Kids play at being grown ups and why shouldn't that be captured on camera if it's handled well? But it doesn't make every image of a kid wearing make up sinister unless it's overtly so or someone's looking at the image with the thought already in mind.

Edit: +1 to Luci's post above ^

Well unusually for NM, it tries to discuss photographic issues. If the forum was restricted to Fine Art, then it would be empty. Anyway it says "Discuss techniques, thought processes...".

I don't like her pose (too stiff) and the cropping goes against what little I do know about cropping (thanks Tony & Peter! ) but apart from this...if she keeps going with modelling she might be one of the next supermodels if she retains her looks as she grows.

She has a beautiful face and I like the look she is giving.

What you have to think on is that the traditional man wants to 'protect' right back to caveman times. What makes men want to protect more than anything? Young/children.

I studied Sociology and it was interesting to know that the ideal image of women is actually disturbingly child-like...large eyes, smooth skin, petite features and slim waists. For on of our projects we had to do a presentation on how paedophilia could actually be explained using this method. The 'normal man' is attracted to the woman with large eyes, petite features and smooth skin- childlike, but nevertheless, a WOMAN. The paedophile has an overexaggerated image of this beauty and actually lusts for CHILDREN. Quite interesting and very disturbing no?

She's a beautiful child and I have no doubt her mother and father are very proud.

I also understand that paedophiles prefer children to look like children, not like little adults.
