I notice that we are now cropping folio thumbnails

At least one of mine, a long landscape picture, is cropped

This is not as bad as FB and flutter who make square crops but I consider it rude to distort my thumbnails and it encourages the unwashed to think it is 'OK'

Why isn't there now 3 or even 4 columns of thumbnails ?

I don't understand the need for websites to emulate the bad practices on others just because it is fashionable for the young to distort everything

perhaps I am just too old...

Not sure I follow?

I'm viewing on safari, and your images are all as they should be as far as I can see. Landscapes look landscape, as do portrait orientations.

And I havent swapped to "classic" view either...

Found it and see what you mean.

I have a 5 pane image of a chair plus models, this is truncated too in thumbnail, but was in the pre update ( Feb ) version of the site.

Hi Myk,

The algorithm used to generate the thumbnails was changed back in November 2008 (November, 2008 Site Update Development Notes - Under Image Manager Section) which set a maximum width for thumbnails to address issues of horizontal scrolling with extra wide thumbnails. The new algorithm does perform cropping on the thumbnail if the main image is extra wide (sorry for being vague here, I do not have the code in front of me to give a better explanation).

The other alternative to cropping was to shrink the thumbnail so that it met the maximum width constraint of 320px for medium thumbnails and 178px for small thumbnails. From the test runs that we performed, the thumbnails were vertically too short and presented clarity issues. We have considered providing a feature in the future to the Image Manager which would give the submitting user the choice of which algorithm to use; however, there hasn't been any request for it.

Sincerely,
