Has anyone any experience of this (good or bad)?

It seems a good idea, but I'll only try it if it is not a time-vampire.

I've just started using it (2 location shoots with it so far) - and it works pretty well.

However, I've not managed to get it transferring RAW images in direct mode (when there is no wi-fi available) and so have had to shoot RAW+jpg to be able to review the shots in real time. This isn't a problem other than the card is small and fills up quickly - if I can get RAW transfer working as well and once I've built confidence in it then I'll probably start using endless memory mode.

I also bought a camera connection kit for the ipad which allows you to read SD cards or to connect direct to the camera - this works very well for checking images in between sets but isn't instant like the EyeFi

I also have one of the ipad camera connection kits and it works very well, you can use it the second after you have taken the shot to have a larger preview (regardless of RAW or jpeg). It would be as quick as using the wifi (if it is or is not available)

You are welcome to borrow mine as we are both in Chippenham whenever you like, just send me a PM.

Thanks J,

I think the E-3 I am using (one of its differences to the E-5) is that it won't take the SD (it wants an xD).

As Eye-Fi don't do CF or xD, it looks like you are on to a winner.

Not familiar with the Oly but a review I read said it took cf and sd? My D3 only takes CF and works fine with an adapter. Don't bother trying to transmit RAW it takes too long but a medium jpeg going to the eyefi and a raw going to a normal card works fine. It also works fine on my Sony Nex saving but RAW and Jpeg to the eyefi card and transmitting only the jpeg.

What CF adaptor are you using Paul?

I've been googling, and some evidently work, and others don't....nothing is ever simple eh?

99% of adapters use the same chipset, this causes problem with Canon cameras and there is a (relatively) new German adapter that works with Canon. I'm fine with the standard adapter off eBay but I've removed the metal from the case to increase range. The best site for info is Rob Galbraith where they've gone in to great detail about using it with shuttersnitch. Despite what many sites still say there is no need to jailbreak the iPad or use a wifi router direct mode works just fine.

Jeremy, unless you particularly want a full size jpeg try reducing the size to the 6-8mp range and you'll find you'll barely have finished shooting a set and they'll all be on the iPad.

I've mine set to 6.8mp (medium) and 'normal' image quality. One thing to bear in mind is that it's the jpeg that gets displayed on your rear LCD too so you won't be able to zoom in as much but it's certainly good enough IMHO

Oh well.......I grabbed a connector thingy (£20) in Currys, and I am happy with the image quality, but I need to shoot to card, and copy across via cable.

I have also grabbed Shuttersnitch, and when I get the time, I will pick up an Eye-Fi card with an adaptor....(I may see if I can trial one in the shop......as the camera body of the E-3 is quite a solid metal one (it's a tank of a thing).......and it may struggle I guess.

Thanks for all the help and ideas folks!!!!

RE: Camera to iPad via EyeFi? Apr 9, 2012 11:08am

I used a wired connection yesterday for my shoot, and it worked really well......it was a family shoot, and the parents were able to review the images pretty immediately.

It was enough to make me order the Eye-Fi card and an adaptor today......

I'll probably be fighting the tech for a while, but if I get it working, I can see it being a major step forward for my workflow.

Thanks to all who have contributed thus far!!!!

I am not 100% sure but I think the "mobile" one does not do RAW.

Looks like a great buy nonetheless if it fits your workflow

That's right Bob. My advice for anyone planning on using any form of wifi camera connector for more than the odd raw file would be 'don't'. Note also that if you edit a RAW file on the iPad you actually open the embedded jpeg (other than a couple of esoteric exceptions) which again makes uploading them pretty useless for many folk.

Shuttersnitch users may also want to note a new version is awaiting approval http://www.shuttersnitch.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=836

I have been using Eye-Fi card on my Canon D60. I use it to transfer Jpegs to my Laptop. My problem is that I haven't found a software for windows which will display last image on my laptop in real-time so that I can check focus, zoom in on details. The one I have found will loop the images and display as a slide-show

I know you can do this with Ipad and Shuttersnith. Does anyone know a good solution for Windows laptop?

Thank you Paul. It seems like "shoot and View" software might do it. I will contact them tomorrow to see how much is the software.

Yes you are right but I only want this set up for previewing in the studio so should suit.

RE: Camera to iPad via EyeFi? Apr 14, 2012 12:45pm

A great thanks to all who have helped, advised and given food for thought.

After a bit of a hiccup (I managed to buy a SDHC-CF adaptor that didn't fully work.....(although it so nearly did I thought it was me)....solved by a quick trip to Maplins and twenty quid, I now have a "working" eye-fi to iPad.

I also have the cable connector, which works very well too.....so thoroughly recommend that as well.

I will experiment with RAW on and RAW off.....although currently, I can send just jpegs to the iPad, and when I get home to the office, I can switch on the camera and it downloads RAW to the main PC in slowtime (they are quite slow).

I will have a play.......and update.

BTW, the eye-fi is not bomb-proof in a CF adaptor, and eye-fi pretty much wash their hands of any issues.....(apart from one very helpful guy I spoke to...).

Glad to hear you have success Bob , am seriously considering this for my D7000 to my laptop, reasonable quality jpegs would be fine and happy to be able to download raw's later. I Just want to be able to see instant results of each shot to see if i need to retake/ amend lighting !

You will be fine. The D7000 is specifically designed to be compatible with the eyefi card. Bob, the only significant issue is likely to be to do with the camera powering off the CF slot during image transfer which can usually be overcome in the settings ( at the expense of battery life), eyefi compatible cameras avoid these issues.

Jeremy, if you shoot in range of your home network why don't you just use it rather than direct mode?
