Hey ladles and jellyspoons,
As the title says, who would be interested?
It would be for anyone in the midlands and for my sake, I was hoping to hold it in central Birmingham.
I know there is one which is held monthly in a club on Broad Street, but for me it's never held on a good day.
I was hoping to get one organised for July but I know for some of you, it could be too soon, so if we all agree, we can get it sorted for August.
I will leave it up to you lot for date suggestions, as it's the one thing arguments are normally over.

This post bugs me slightly, I'll tell you why. I run a fairly successful social in Gloucester. Its the "Gloucestershire meet" really. Much like there is a Bristol meet for the south west, a Swindon meet for Wiltshire, a Cardiff one for South Wales etc. The socials run via a facebook group, in that group I have around 500 people. Now, to get 40-50 people to come to a social I actually have to invite all of those 500. So it runs at a little under 10% of people invited, who actually turn up. As you have said, there is already a social in Birmingham on broad street. Ok, its on a day that you have managed to get to yet, but that is not the organisers fault. A local photographer to me has decided that because he cant be arsed to drive from Cheltenham to Gloucester (ohhhh, all of a couple of miles) that he will start a Cheltenham meet. Now, I can pretty much gaurantee that he has added everybody from the group I have built up over 3 years, and now, those 40 or so people from my immediate area will end up being split across two meets. The net result of this will be that eventually both will fall apart and die, because those people also attend maybe the Swindon one, and the Cardiff one...so why go to two local ones the week after each other? Organising a regular successful meet is not easy, it's time consuming and its pretty annoying when all that work goes to nothing when only a few people turn up. What you are doing, while you might think is a good idea, will only actually end up damaging the one that is already held in central Birmingham. Of course, there is the theory that more choice is better, but when there are two in the same area, the attendances fall (the new one will be busy for a little while and then fall off) and then both will revert to a few men in a pub on a wednesday night. What you should be doing, is doing whatever you can to support the one that is already there.

I understand what you're saying and yes it's a shame that people can't be arsed. However I haven't got a car, so for the ones that have been set up and are succesful, I can't attend without spending drinking money on transport to and from the venue.
The one that is already set up in Brum happens to be on a monday night, 7pm-10.30pm in a nightclub, I've been told by a few people who attended a previous one that the good thing about it was that the drinks were cheap. Yes the drinks are cheap and yes ok they have a club to themselves-but a monday night? how many people do you reckon will actually turn up? Plus I can only take someone with me who is also in the business and as it's a club, it's guestlist only.
The meets I went to in london allowed you to bring one person who you wanted and anyone interested could turn up, I took my other half and he ended up getting to know the people I'd eventually work with, so he became more comfortable and relaxed when I went off to do a shoot.
This is what I'm going to allow people to do, plus I don't just want to organise it myself, as you say it's difficult to maintain, I want feedback, I want input from people. I want mine to be a social meet up, as if you were all good mates, not to be on a guestlist.

So? Don't drink? It's never been a problem for me not drinking at socials. I have no idea why its a Monday night, mine are a Thursday, others I know are on Tuesdays/Wednesdays. Whatever day it chosen there will be someone who has a problem with that day to be honest. I would imagine also, that if nobody is turning up there, then it will quickly fold. Is this the one that I have heard about that charges its guests £5 a pop to attend? If someone wants to bring a friend to my socials then its encouraged, it is a social, not a shoot, after all! The more the merrier in my book! The guestlist thing is stupid. But I know a photographer who went to the one you have to pay to go to and thought he was getting into something special because he was "on the guestlist"....lol...

I don't know for sure if you have to pay, but I know there's a guestlist and yeah as you say, thursdays have a better turn out then any other day. For me, I like a couple of drinks at a social get together....i don't get drunk, never see the point in that, but I like to have something to drink. It's like meeting friends at a cafe and not having a cuppa-for me it feels weird.
I'd like to go to your social but as I say, it'll cost me over £20 to get there, and when I don't get paid nearly enough for that cash to be spare, it's too much.
At least with a central brum one, it'll cost me less than £5 to get there. Plus without the guestlist, it'll feel more friendly.

The last one went well even though the weather put a lot of people off. lus my camera was on the blink so couldnt take any photos. There is another one organised for 17th August. Same time and place as the last one. There is an event page for it on facebook. Hope to see you there.

I realise that I'm a total newbie but I might pop by if nobody would mind. Square Peg's one of my favourite water holes in town and it could be fun to meet some new people.
