After such a great response from my copyright problem I thought I'd throw this one out there too...
I bought a 24-70 Canon Lens From Wilkinson Cameras (online) in Jan 2010. It had a 2 year Warranty.
During this time it developed a focussing problem. I sent it off and they repaired it no problem(so I thought) and returned it.
But it wasn't fixed. The problem was still there. So I contacted them and they told me I had to send off my camera with the lens so they can be calibrated together.
Got it back after 3 or 4 weeks- still not working.
I phoned them, they told me to send camera and lens again(it was costing me money and time to send lens/camera insured post) so I said if it wasn't fixed this time I want my money back,he agreed.
Trouble is I was off to South Africa for 3 weeks so needed the camera. Then had a few photography commitments when I got back.Basically I messed up about the time that the warranty would run out(my fault I admit) and left it too late.
Then recently a friend suggested to me that even though the warranty has now run out,the actual problem happened and was acknowledged during the valid time and hadn't been rectified.
So my question is,are the company still obliged to fix my lens even though the warranty has now run out?

My 450D stopped working a few weeks after the guarantee had run out. Got in touch with Canon and they repaired it for free. So in that instance I found them to be flexible and customer-friendly.

Yeah,I will definitely try.I was hoping that someone would know of some loophole or whatever that they would still be responsible because the malfunction was actually in the warranty period :-) Knowledge is power after all! ;-)

When I dealt with them I adopted a 'pretty please' approach. It worked for me. Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons; for they find you crunchy and good with ketchup

I was thinking of going back to Wilkinson Cameras (who I dealt with before)
You think maybe I should contact Canon direct then?

Talk to Canon, they are pretty good - Had an L series lens go wrong on me one month outside the 1 year waurentee pointed out that I wold expect a Canon lens to last at lleast a couple of years before dying. There is also an EU law about fit for purpose that basically says things should last about 5 years of normal use, so its still worth asking. Plus if original fault was after less than on year when initially reported law is on your side - I had a tree die after 2 years but because I had originally told the garden centre there were problems after 10 months, when it finally died they replacd it FOC.

Seeing as you had made them aware of the fault and they had attempted repair previously then you are well within your rights.
If they quibble just offer to contact the trading standards office to clarify. I've had to do that before and I've had the problem resolved.

I know it says you're in the Portsmouth area, there is Fixation which is based in London, they are bloody marvellous at fixing things. The only problem is they are a bit pricey. I think the problem with your particular lens is that there is a washer that has come loose (simple if you know how to dismantle/assemble the lens assembly, not the actual glass stack itself)
There is this link to a blog where it tells of the common problem of this lens through constant usage. I will try find it and link it here

You wanna bet. Canon don't give a stuff about their customers. They would rather sell another product than fix an existing one properly.

Yeah, I think the fact that the problem occured within the time limit is on my side. I've just emailed Canon to see if they can help resolve the matter. Fingers crossed......

few years ago i brought the canon 100mm x 400mm and took out a three year warranty just inside the warranty the lens failed i got in touch with canon and they had moved premises and had no record of my warranty and told me to produce evidence of a warranty or i would have to pay for the repair. boy i had to turn the house upside down to find it? (it took hours)

Sorry to be off off topic but why would they need you to send your camera. If a lens is being repaired surly that is done using something a little more technical than looking through a viewfinder. It just makes me wonder if the store ever sent your lens to have the repair.

As Kizer says.It was to calibrate the lens to the camera.Although I wouldn't have that should be necessary. After all whenever you buy a lens it isn't calibrated to your camera and the focussing works fine(or it should lol) but that's what they wanted. Incidentally they sent a copy of the bill for the repair(which they paid, not me) back with the camera. So they did send it off,I've just checked and it was to Canon.
