In the market for two new lens.

I have a Nikon D3100 but my kit lens has just broke. My main interest is portraiture but Im also trying a mix of things at the minute. So Im thinking of getting a portraiture lens and an all rounder.

So I was thinking a Nikon Prime lens at 35mm or 85mm

and a 18-100mm lens of any make that works for Nikon

The lens need to have built in auto-focus since the D3100 doesn’t have it in the body. I think they have to be marked AF-S but Im not 100% sure

Also since the D3100 has a cropped sensor Im not sure which size of prime lens is best for portraiture.

So could anyone suggest some lens?

My budget is up to £400.

Thanks

Nikon 18-105mm AF-S DX Nikkor f3.5-5.6 G ED VR Lens would cover wide to telephoto portraits and is around 200 GBP.

That Camera has an 11 point auto-focus module therefore it will accept any of the man/auto focus lenses appropriate for that camera.

The Sensor in that model is the new DX Sensor so you will need to check with the supplier that the lens is appropriate.. can't help more than that sorry, I'm a Canon Bod...!

I've got the D3100 as well, not my main camera, I use film SLRs mainly. But for a prime, I'd recommend the 50mm f1.8 AS-F, although it's an FX lens, it does have the built-in autofocus motor, plus it's a silent wave lens too. On the D3100, it will have the field of view of a 75mm, which makes it ideal as a portrait lens. Don't go for the f1.4 though, although it's a bit faster, that slightly wider aperture makes images softer when used with DSLRs, while the f1.8 maintains sharp images when wide open at f1.8.
