I like the subject and light, but I find the immediate background intrusive, especially that enormous post, if that's what it is.

Yes it is a post. It was one of those shots that wasn't planned. I saw my daughter's expression and took the shot. I would have preferred the post not to have been there but if I had gotten her to move the shot would have been gone.

Amazingly, the only editing was to turn it black and white, It hasn't even been cropped.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. It is only by honest and open critique that we learn, grow and improve. I always think that the best shots of people are when they don't know that they are being photographed. It's so much more natural, don't you think? This is one of my favourite pics, though my daughter doesn't like it. She thinks she looks too melancholy. That's the appeal for me. She looks vulnerable but not in a contrived way.

You certainly caught you daughter deep in thought.

If you have access and kind of editing program i would tone down the high lites.

Easy way to find them is turn the photo upside down

I love this photo! At first glance I thought ok so its just a snapshot. But then realised I couldn't take my eyes off it for some reason.

I found myself looking round the entire photo taking in details but always returning to her face and that expression that I can't quite work out.

She looks like she's either deep in thought or perhaps just idly watching a pidgeon eat breadcrumbs or something? Who knows? But thats what makes it a great photo. Candid is always best.

I find it so engaging that the blown highlights cluttered background etc don't bother me at all :-).

Thank you Petesky. You have said all the reasons that I like about the shot. I have always beena big fan of candid shots. They are so 'of the moment', if you know what I mean?
