I am unpacking my softboxes for the first time in a few years ...

I have lost some of the metal dishes about the size of a saucer that stop you getting hot spots on the middle of the box.

They fit onto an umbrella post.

Need to buy some more ... but I cant find them on the net as I cant remember what they are called.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Ketih

I'm a bit confused because you mention softboxes and umbrellas. If you are talking about brollyboxes, they don't usually have a baffle/diffuser.

If you are thinking of the very small reflector which attaches to the head and has a hole for an umbrella shaft to pass through, the name you are looking for is a "spill kill" .

I can't think I've ever seen a metal dish in a softbox - in beauty dishes and the like sure.

But the whole point of a softbox is it diffuses anyway so you don't get a hotspot.

Unless you've got a special softbox.....

It depends whether you are talking about barebulb flashes or reflector flashes (I have a ring-tube broncolour that swings both ways!).

A barebulb flash needs more back reflection in a SB to direct the light forward, but a (usually budget) flash with a ring tube set into a reflector is always going to create a hot spot on the front diffuser - to get around this it needs either a spill saucer, or a white 'g-banger' (an antipodeanism = thong/g-string i.e. a small square of nylon material suspended on a couple of bits of elastic) attached with velcro to tone down the hot spot in the middle..

Some of the smaller soft boxes have diffusion discs. Elinchrom do them in silver, white and gold.
