I have an idea for an image which will be Matt Miller-esque.
I need to represent a criminal in the image. How would you do it, without being too obvious or tacky?
David.

Are you looking to depict a prison scene, an act of crime, etc? Is the 'criminal' sadistic, misguided, etc?
Kind of depends, if you are depicting an axe welding murderer...or a 'chav' in a hoodie.

Without wanting to give away too much. The image will contain a copper arresting a criminal. I was thinking of the typical chavy look, but lets face it that isn't very arty.
My other thought process was of making the criminals look like barristers.
I want anybody to be able to tell that the individuals that are supposed to be criminals are obviously that.

Appreciate it is hard to say without giving everything away 'chavvy' doesn't need to be velour tracksuits...I'm thinking (I'm using stereotypes here, for arts sake), for example - a man in scrubby jeans and a wifebeater top, with long greasy/overly gelled hair, stubble or facial hair...a bit grubby, etc. I would go for dirty/dark colours as much as possible. But not all criminals fit stereotypes - your barrister idea would work well, IMO. Or bankers, maybe even politicians...

OMG! im an adjective ... i'm fast becoming a verb ... Um well if you want to do it like I would you think of the three most famous criminals you can think of and make a composite of them ... the most obvious choices would be Charles Manson, Moriarty and the Hamburgler ... hope that helps

To Miller....have to get a dictionary definition together for that.
You could use props as well rather than have the person looking dodgy. Say a guy in a suit being restrained with a gun or knife just in the shot.

Pinstripe suit and pencil moustache.....For a forties and fifties gangster. Double breasted suit and of course any one in any clothing you like so long as you have the policeman holding the criminals hands behind his back. If you want a comical look then you need a striped Tshirt, a thin eye mask and a stick with a bundle tied on the end marked swag...... _______________________________________ Circles Incredible Blog

You say you don't want too obvious.Everyone has suggested or implied a man so far.
How about a woman,30ish,fairly smartly dressed, clothes shopping bags on the floor either side of her and wearing handcuffs?

Also very much depends on how allegorical you want to be, rather than literal. The vast majority of real criminals are very ordinary people and would not make you look at them in a crowd. In 16 years in the prison service I have only met one prisoner who LOOKED like a prisoner. Mind you, he looked as if he was a prisoner designed by Charles Dickens!
I can happily offer technical advice on getting details like hand-cuffs right.
I'm not being entirely facetious when I say, dress him (or her) like a banker.

Really? He has never killed anybody, in fact never even made it round to Sharon Tate's house. How about Jeremy Thorpe?

How about Jeremy Thorpe?

It was a list of the most famous criminals not a list of the most naughty ones ... However ... both of them don't even come close to the evil that is the Hamburgular ... Myra Hindley, Dr Evil, Bill Sykes they aint got nothing on this guy ... just take a look at this archive footage ... it is indeed criminal

If it's a female with shopping bags, you would need to have a foil lined freezer bag with clothes with tags on poking out, or a male with a joint of meat (have arrested several people stealing meat as it's a high value item)

Quoting Sharon:

Though I think instead of a man-have it a woman wearing a wifebeater, stubble, grubby etc.
