I've used a complete set of Canon ones in the past. I also own a transmitter (Canon again)
The set worked as intended - wireless TTL with high-speed sync which you can obviously use in broad daylight and from any distance (they worked at ~100-150m from the camera during my little test). They seemed to get muddled if you use them near large metallic objects (cars for instance). This was a while ago with early firmware as well.
As for my transmitter, it's a pain in the arse to set up due to the trial and error aspect but I've managed to squeeze an extra 1/3rd stop of sync speed when using studio flash (Profoto B2r) along with the transmitters Hypersync function. This is very much dependent on the camera used as to what benefits you may get (if any).
So despite all the Canon horror stories, my experience of them was good.
