Just my two pence...one of my images of Whitby Abbey was 'borrowed' without consent. I wrote and got a nice payout
Cool, good for you!! Did you get results from just one letter then? And what was the payout,if thats not too personal a question?

I sent a recorded mail letter and received an apology and a payout.

quoting post from coherent_light:
any of the microstock sites ,Alamy, shuterstock, will give you an idea of what it should cost the magazine
Unless your work is licensed through microstock or other low-cost sites, I would ignore any price comparison with respect to infringement. One infringer baulked at the fee stating "we can get images for less than £1" My reply was "Yes, but not mine and had you asked first I would have declined such a low price" They settled.

Exactly! I'm looking forward to hearing just what kind of fee is received. Laurence J. Power

I heard a really good one today. I met a photographer specialising in fine art. He runs a gallery in London and also offers photography courses. A woman came into the gallery recently and dumped off her card in an attempt to tout for business. Problem was the image used on her card beleonged to the gallery. From our conversation I understand that he will be contacting her, but she will be receiving a large invoice, not a commission..

Can we have an update on the current position, was there a reasonable payout? Laurence J. Power

Just to put a question out there, how secure are the image on this site from being ripped off? I recently had someone contact me who said they were setting up a website to promote art nude photography and liked my work and would I like to have it shown on their website for free! This led me to wonder if my images are safe on NM or whether I'm going to find my work ripped off by some unscrupulous sod.

I think a lot of people on here (photographers and models) had a similar message. It was from a guy in eastern Europe, if I remember correctly. The consensus seemed to be that if someone wants to nick an image, they will. But in this guy's case, the consensus was that as the guy went to the trouble of asking he's trying to do things the right way; so if you say 'no' he will probably accept that.

I've learnt alot from all the different answers. My photos on Flickr are not allowed to be used by anyone.I've done a screen grab. Didn't have an option to 'inspect' element' when I right clicked the photo(Anyone know how?) so all I could do was save the properties. Not sure how effective that is.
I haven't contacted the site yet...not till I have more ammunition and knowledge.
To be honest, with the great spectrum of conflicting replies I've read, I'm still unsure what to do.
I'm off to CAB tomorrow to see if they can give me more information about my legal rights and whether it's really worth persuing. And I will see if I can order a brochure to see if it's in print.
Thanks to everyone for your input so far...:-)
With a bit of luck, you might find old versions of pages featuring your photo at the "Wayback Machine" http://archive.org/web/web.php which archives nearly all pages on the web from time to time So even after the copyright infringer removes your photo, a copy of their page may still exist in the archive. It may also allow you to find out roughly for how long they displayed your image. Whether the archive itself is infringing everybody's copyright is another matter...
